ROWE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Police say a woman jogger has been killed after being hit by an Amtrak train in the unincorporated community of Rowe.
Police identify the victim as 18-year-old Amanda Byrne, of Rowe.
Witnesses told police that the woman was jogging on the tracks about 2 p.m. Friday and the train's engineer made several attempts to alert her by sounding the horn. He then made an emergency attempt to stop the train before it fatally hit the victim.
Police later discovered that Byrne was listening to music on a portable headset as she jogged and also had a headband covering her ears.
There were no reported injuries aboard on the train that was transporting 125 passengers from Chicago to Los Angeles.
